CHINEKE! ORCHESTRA – DVOŘÁK, GOODYEAR AND GRIEG

Submitted by Garry on

Callaloo, perhaps best known as a popular Caribbean dish, is also a virtuosic tour de force for piano and orchestra composed by young American composer/pianist, Stewart Goodyear. Full of driving jazz rhythms and colourful orchestration, Callaloo is an immediately appealing work.

Having opened the last Birmingham Classical season, Chineke! make a welcome return as the final orchestra to perform in this season. With Wayne Marshall at their helm, Chineke! bring their joy and energy to Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suite and Dvořák’s dramatic Seventh Symphony.

The extraordinary Chineke! Orchestra, Europe’s first orchestra to feature a majority of black and minority ethnic musicians, continues to fulfil its mission to champion, change and celebrate diversity in classical music.

Chineke! is not only an exciting idea but a profoundly necessary one. The kind of idea which is so obvious that you wonder why it is not already in place. The kind of idea which could deepen and enrich classical music in the UK for generations. What a thrilling prospect!
