Afro-Caribbean women,

Brum: Herstories (New play development.)

Calling all Afro-Caribbean women in Birmingham and the West Midlands. I am a West Midlands based playwright called Lorna French. I want to hear about who you are and what your personal geography of Birmingham and the West Midlands is.

Oral history interviews with black Afro-Caribbean women living in Birmingham and the West Midlands will be undertaken with women who are grandmothers, mothers or granddaughters. These oral history interviews will be used to inspire the narrative and structure of a new full-length play called Brum: Herstories. This explores the female Afro-Caribbean experience in Birmingham and the West Midlands from the Windrush generation up to the present.

A staged reading of Brum: Herstories will be presented at MAC Birmingham in September 2019.

As part of a grant from Arts Council England, this is an opportunity to develop my creative practice as a playwright by incorporating oral history into the research phase of the play, Brum: Herstories, and also as an inspiration for the play, both structurally and content-wise.

I cannot wait to hear from you. Please include your full name, date of birth and how long you have lived in Birmingham or the West Midlands.
