The song was written by Jimmy Cliff, but it was Desmond Dekker (pictured) who released the song in 1970, it went to No 2 in the charts. Now it’s your turn to sing.

70 years ago on 22 June 1948, the Empire Windrush landed at Tilbury Docks, Essex. The arrival of 492 passengers from the Caribbean marked a seminal moment in Britain’s history and has come to stand for the rich diversity of this nation.
The Windrush Generation made a huge contribution to rebuilding the country following the war and their settlement and their descendants have continued to enrich social, economic, political and religious life.

Trust joins with the community to mark Windrush 70
On 22 June 1948, the former German cruise liner Empire Windrush arrived in the UK, carrying 492 passengers from the West Indies. Mainly former service personnel, this was the first wave of post-war immigration with many of the passengers taking up roles in the NHS, which launched just two weeks later.
